Don’t Let Michelle Obama’s Sacrifice Go Unnoticed!

In the First Lady’s speech to the Chicago committee yesterday she said, “As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days, so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home.”  I would like to know what bonehead thinks that her trip to Denmark was a sacrifice.  Has the definition of sacrifice been skewed somewhere along the line to mean private jets, lunch with royalty, visits to European tourist hot spots, and travelling with Oprah Winfrey?  What bonehead thought that sacrifice was the appropriate word, I would like to know.

Let’s have a look at the ‘sacrifice’ that I vow never to forget.  The high yesterday in Copenhagen, Denmark was 55 degrees with no precipitation.  The First Lady would have been encumbered with her purse and…well, her heels.  The high this time of year in Afghanistan is in the 90s, and our men and women in the military are encumbered with 80lb rucksacks, rifles, and body armor weighing around 25 pounds.

Yesterday Michelle ‘sacrificed’ by having lunch with the Queen of Denmark.  While our President sits on his hands deciding what to do with our soldiers in Afghanistan they are being shot at and dying.  They are being subjected to IEDs, and in most cases they eat MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), a wonderful (sarc.) packaged lunch made up of a wide array of things that just about anyone would want to eat out of a bag.  No kidding they come in a bag.

The President and First Lady ‘sacrificed’ by flying separately in private jumbo jets, spending thousands (by modest report, reported high would be millions) of taxpayer dollars for fuel and spewing tons of ‘evil’ carbon into the air.  I guess their ‘sacrifice’ in this was the environment…and hypocrisy.  Our soldiers get to Afghanistan either packed like sardines in coach class of commercial liners, or if they are less lucky in the back of C130s which have minimal climate control, and as described by my father who got the chance to ride in one a few years back ‘like riding in a school bus’.  I hear tell that the temperatures in the back of those things can get cold enough you can see your breath.

I think you get the picture.  Whoever told Michelle her trip was a sacrifice, and the First Lady for using that phrase in her speech, needs a real lesson in sacrifice.  They need to talk to the soldiers, and their families.  Firefighters and their families, police officers, single mothers working two jobs to support their kids, and any others that put their Life, Liberty, and their Pursuit of Happiness on the line for others.  That is sacrifice.

Shame on whoever told her that she was sacrificing anything.  Shame on her for using that phrase and not throwing it out as meaningless.
